It's never too late to attempt something new, as Pablo Sandoval proved.
The former Giants standout third baseman and World Series MVP made his professional debut with the Staten Island FerryHawks of the Atlantic League on Saturday night.
After being released from a minor league contract by the Giants in late March, Sandoval signed with the FerryHawks two weeks later, extending his remarkable 16-year career.
Through 120 games, the 38-year-old is batting.248 with 10 home runs, 79 RBI, and a.677 OPS. He primarily plays third base for Staten Island.
But Saturday's independent ball shift was a little different for the World Series hero.
Sandoval allowed no runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Lancaster Barnstormers,
striking out four and walking one while hitting 1-for-3 as Staten Island's No. 3 hitter.
Sandoval's arm strength has never been questioned as he has spent his entire career on the hot corner, pitching two scoreless relief innings for the Giants in 2018 and 2019.
Sandoval appeared on the mound twice this season, both times as a reliever for the FerryHawks. In two innings, he allowed one hit, two walks, and zero runs.
Sandoval's storied career certainly took an interesting turn on Saturday. The issue now is if he has more surprises in store before calling it a career.
