AKRON, Ohio – On March 1, 2003, LeBron James was driving his new silver Hummer southbound on East Avenue in Akron when he was pulled over for improper plate display.
His temporary tag was on the dashboard, and the back plate bracket was not affixed.
The Akron Police Department issued Ticket No. A 317409 to the 18-year-old James,
and it is currently up for auction through Goldin Auctions in New Jersey. The auction house authenticated the ticket.
The ticket, which was filed on March 7, 2003, in Akron Municipal Court, has slight stains as well as light edge and corner wear, but James has signed it.
James' Hummer became a public story when the Ohio High School Athletic Association attempted to crack down on the high school basketball player, whose mother had purchased the car.
Attorney Fred Nance stepped in. James was eventually cleared before the citation was issued,
but the episode contributed to his defensive attitude towards the media and outsiders.
