Mike McCarthy's last three regular seasons with the Dallas Cowboys each finished with a 12-5 record.
That's impressive. The Cowboys' previous three postseason appearances all ended the same way:
with an exit before the conference championship game. That's not impressive.
McCarthy, on the other hand, will be eligible to return for the 2024 season, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced on Wednesday.
ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the story prior to Jones' confirmation.
McCarthy will be retained as Dallas' head coach for a fifth season, despite the Cowboys' stunning 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. McCarthy is 42-25 as Cowboys head coach.
The Cowboys won 12 games, the NFC East, and the No. 2 seed in the NFC, but those victories were followed by another first-round playoff defeat,
which many Cowboys fans deemed unsatisfactory. But in the end, Jones' eyes are the only ones that matter
as he doubles down on making things better for his Cowboys with McCarthy
Jones has a reputation as an impatient team owner, but he hasn't lived up to it in many years.
He stuck with Jason Garrett longer than most Cowboys fans would have. And he's doing the same with McCarthy.
Jones sacked Wade Phillips in 2010, before Garrett's departure at the end of the 2019 season.
