The New York Giants are making crucial adjustments ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Washington Commanders
After a tough 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1, the Giants have been hit with injuries that are reshaping their roster and coaching staff dynamics.
One key loss is receiver and punt returner Gunner Olszewski, who suffered a groin injury during pregame warmups for Week 1. As a result, he has been placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for the near future
The Giants also lost receiver Darius Slayton to a concussion during that same game, leaving their wide receiver unit thinner than expected.
These injuries are forcing the Giants to lean on their depth, including elevating linebackers Ty Summers and Tomon Fox from the practice squad for special teams play in Week 2.
In addition to player injuries, the Giants are dealing with a significant coaching staff issue. During the Week 1 game against the Vikings, outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen suffered a fractured leg due to a sideline collision
Bullen underwent surgery on Thursday and will not be able to travel with the team for Week 2. Defensive assistant Ben Burress will step in to handle Bullen’s responsibilities with the outside linebackers on the sideline,
moving from his usual position in the coach’s booth. This change comes at a critical time, as the Giants’ edge rushers failed to produce a sack in their opener,
putting extra pressure on them to perform against the Commanders and their dynamic quarterback Jayden Daniels
The Giants' Week 1 loss revealed some areas of concern, particularly in the pass rush. Without a sack against the Vikings, the defense will need to find ways to disrupt Daniels,
who poses a dual-threat challenge with his mobility. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is expected to play a more hands-on role in overseeing the outside linebacker group until Bullen can return to his duties.
