Baker Mayfield says Bryce Young's story is 'far from finished' following benching

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield understands Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young. Mayfield was a castaway quarterback before joining Tampa Bay.

When asked about Young's benching, Mayfield publicly praised the Panthers quarterback. "When you're not surrounded by pieces and given the chance to succeed,

quarterback is hard, especially for young guys," Mayfield told reporters. "Many guys have talent and intelligence but not the perfect chance or fit.

"This seat fits me better than others. Not to denigrate other teams, but it's about your teammates and coaches.

After acquiring Deshaun Watson in 2022, the Cleveland Browns released Mayfield, the 2018 No. 1 overall pick. He left after seven games after being dealt to the Carolina Panthers.

Los Angeles Rams claimed Mayfield off waivers in 2022. The Buccaneers become Mayfield's fourth NFL franchise in 2023 after a one-year rental season in LA.

Mayfield was named to the Pro Bowl after posting career-high passing yards and touchdowns. He received a three-year Tampa Bay contract extension for his efforts.

The journeyman quarterback rejuvenated his career in Tampa Bay and expects Young to do the same. “For Bryce, I can relate to this, finding that belief within yourself again,” Mayfield said. “He’ll understand. His tale is far from over."

Young, 23, is young. The 2023 NFL No. 1 pick may play for years. His rookie contract goes through 2026. Panthers coach Dave Canales told reporters Wednesday that the organization is not “really considering” dealing Young despite his benching.
