Russell Wilson's debut in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform may be delayed a bit longer due to a lingering calf injury.
The veteran quarterback, who missed the team's season opener, is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.
However, reports suggest that Wilson will likely be sidelined until at least Week 4, leaving Justin Fields as the starter for the immediate future.
According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers plan to have Fields start in the upcoming games,
including Sunday's matchup against the Broncos and the home opener on September 22 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The team is being cautious with Wilson’s injury, aiming to prevent the calf strain from worsening.
“Justin Fields will get the next two starts while Russell Wilson rests his injured calf,” Dulac reported. “The Steelers want to avoid any long-term complications by allowing Wilson ample time to recover.”
Wilson, who signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh for the veteran's minimum of $1.21 million after being released by the Denver Broncos, was a key addition for the Steelers this offseason
Denver will still pay him $39 million despite his departure, a decision that generated headlines.
While Fields led the Steelers to a Week 1 victory, his performance was somewhat limited, passing for just 156 yards
This has led to speculation about who will be the starting quarterback once Wilson is fully healthy. Head coach Mike Tomlin, however, was not ready to entertain any speculation about a quarterback controversy
