49ers' Christian McCaffrey missing Week 2, injured reserve a possibility

Christian McCaffrey is ruled out for a second week due to calf and Achilles issues.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says the team may place McCaffrey on injured reserve (IR), sidelining him for at least four games.

McCaffrey experienced pain after Thursday's practice, frustrating both him and the team.

49ers GM John Lynch stresses the importance of taking the long view to ensure McCaffrey's full recovery.

McCaffrey led the NFL in rushing in 2023 with 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns, along with 564 receiving yards and seven TDs.

– The 49ers don’t want to rush McCaffrey back and compromise his health for the long season ahead.

Jordan Mason impressed as McCaffrey's backup against the Jets, with 28 carries — the most for a 49ers runner in 11 years.

Behind Mason, depth is limited, with Deebo Samuel and rookie Isaac Guerendo filling in, raising concerns over sustainability.
